World's Finest Comics #48 (1950)

High Value: $2,900

Minimum Value: $35

In World's Finest Comics #48, we follow Superman as he navigates The Great Steel Mystery. This tale centers around a genius inventor who develops a revolutionary process for creating a steel that is stronger and cheaper. His discovery leads to a lucrative promotion and a massive increase in his wealth. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse. Roughly a year after the first construction project relying on the new steel, everything made with the metal starts to disappear. It turns out that the process bonds the molecules of the steel so tightly that after about a year, they break down, causing the steel to dissolve.

In addition to The Great Steel Mystery, the issue also contains a variety of other stories, including a Green Arrow adventure featuring a cursed arrow and a Wyoming Kid story that revolves around a lost Spanish treasure train. The comic is chock-full of humor strips and even a text story, providing a little something for everyone. And of course, it wouldn't be a World's Finest Comics issue without the classic Batman taking center stage. In "Song of Crime," the Caped Crusader is invited to be the guest conductor at the Gotham orchestra and is quickly interrupted by none other than The Joker, leading to a musically-themed crime spree.
