In The Phantom Stranger #1 (1952), we follow the story of three friends who board a doomed plane bound for San Francisco. After a newspaper photographer takes their picture, the plane crashes, killing everyone onboard. However, the ghost of Carson Rand haunts Edgar Wright, demanding he reveal certain documents being used for blackmail. The mysterious Phantom Stranger appears, beating the "ghost" away and revealing that all is just trickery. As the story progresses, we see the Phantom Stranger physically restraining the ghost of John Martin who is revealed to be Phillips' co-worker, Matt Wright. Wright has been emulating the ghost of his former friends to throw the police off his trail after being caught skimming funds from a night club's profits. The Phantom Stranger turns Wright over to the authorities, and Phillips recognizes him as the stranger in the newspaper photograph taken before the flight. In another mysterious tale called "The House of Strange Secrets!", the Phantom Stranger saves Neal Hunter from a man who believes he can gain immortality by murdering others. As always, the Phantom Stranger saves the day and escorts Hunter back to his car before disappearing.
