In The Amazing Spider-Man #48 (1967), our arachnid hero is on the hunt for Kraven the Hunter, who escaped from him in the previous issue. However, things take a turn for the worse when Spider-Man comes down with an awful cold. While our hero is struggling to overcome his cold, the Vulture is on his deathbed in prison. As a dying request, he reveals to his cellmate, Blackie Drago, where he has hidden his wings. Blackie takes this information and manages to escape from prison and retrieve the wings. He then creates a helmet and goes on a one-man crime spree. Meanwhile, Peter, still battling his cold, hears about Blackie's crimes and decides to intervene.
