In Amazing Spider-Man #4, Spider-Man faces off against one of his most formidable foes, Sandman. But that's not all - he also has to deal with the constant criticism and belittlement from J. Jonah Jameson. After a run-in with some criminals, who falsely accuse him of attacking them, Spider-Man heads to J. Jonah Jameson's office to give him a piece of his mind. When he can't find Jameson, he decides to leave a surprise for him instead.
On the way out, Spider-Man spots Sandman and attempts to apprehend him, but his mask gets ripped in the process. Unable to risk having his identity exposed, he flees and returns to his room to fix his mask. There, he hears the news about Sandman's origins and his recent criminal activity.
Despite needing an advance payment to improve his webbing, Jameson refuses to give him the money due to the prank Spider-Man played on him earlier. Determined to catch Sandman, Spider-Man breaks a date with Liz Allan to focus on the task at hand. When Sandman ends up hiding out at Peter's school and demands a diploma from the principal, Spider-Man sees an opportunity to catch him. They engage in a fight which results in the school being damaged, causing Jameson to arrive and criticize Spider-Man even further.
After capturing Sandman with a giant vacuum cleaner, Spider-Man's attempts to win back Liz fall flat. Peter begins to wonder if the life of a superhero is worth it, given all the trouble it causes him. But one thing is for sure - his reputation as a comic book icon remains unchallenged, making The Amazing Spider-Man #4 a must-read for comic book fans.
