In The Amazing Spider-Man #3 (1963), witness the birth of one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies, the grotesque Dr. Octopus! As Spider-Man is enjoying his recent success with dealing with the criminals of New York City, an atomic scientist, Dr. Otto Octavius, is conducting an experiment that suddenly goes wrong. During the failed experiment, an explosion causes Octavius to be exposed to a large quantity of radiation, fusing four remote-controlled "arms" to his body, which are now controlled by his mind alone. This incident pushes Dr. Octopus to the verge of insanity, and he begins his criminal career.
J. Jonah Jameson's learns of the accident and sends Peter Parker to take some photos of the recovering Doctor. Upon arriving at the hospital, Peter discovers that the Doctor has turned evil, and the two do battle, with Octavius coming out on top and escaping after his victory. Peter is left feeling down and defeated, pondering if his career and photographer job at the Daily Bugle are over.
Doc Ock returns to the research facility determined to gain control over a large amount of atomic energy. The Fantastic Four are called in to stop Octavius, but they are unable to assist due to other commitments, so they send the Human Torch to provide some assistance. The Human Torch speaks to the students at Peter's high school, inspiring Peter to take on Dr. Octopus once again. He defeats the Doctor in battle by firing his web into the Doctor's eyes, temporarily blinding him and giving Spider-Man the upper hand.
Having defeated Dr. Octopus, Spider-Man seeks out the Human Torch to inform him that the Doctor has been dealt with and to thank him for encouraging him not to give up. This issue is a classic and is considered an essential read for any Spider-Man fan.
