In Strange Adventures #10 (1951), we have the story of The Air Bandits From Outer Space, featuring Captain Comet, written by John Broome under the pen name Edger Ray Merritt. The comic book tells the story of a giant spinning top that appears in the desert. It seems to take no damage when an A-bomb is dropped on it and anyone who gets near it dies. As more tops appear worldwide, the Earth's atmosphere begins to thin. This is when Adam Blake, known as Captain Comet, comes to confront it.

Captain Comet is able to tear his way inside the giant spinning top which he finds out is controlled remotely. He discovers that he can see radio waves and uses this to track the signal into space. He then builds a rocket ship and tracks the signal to a massive alien ship on the dark side of the moon. Here he finds a caretaker who tells him that his people are refugees from a planet with no air. Air kills them, and that's why the tops are removing Earth's atmosphere so his people can colonize. However, Comet shows the alien all its people are dead, and it kills itself.
