Detective Comics #29, the first appearance of Doctor Death, tells the thrilling story of Batman's encounter with the notorious criminal. Doctor Karl Hellfern hatches a plan to extort money from the wealthy, but he knows he must first eliminate Batman. He lays an ambush for Batman, who is shot but manages to escape. However, Batman isn't one to back down from a fight and decides to face Doctor Death head-on.
The Doctor is aware that Batman is his biggest obstacle to world domination, so he lures him with a personal notice column in the newspaper. Batman must go to the General Post Office and ask for a letter addressed to John Jones, which leads him to the Beverly Apartments. Bruce Wayne comes prepared and equips himself with Glass Pellets of choking gas. Batman tackles an oncoming statue and commandeers it to take down Doctor Death's henchmen.
After interrogating the henchmen and getting shot by Jabah, Batman throws a gas pellet to make his escape. Drawing upon his detective skills, Bruce goes undercover as John P. Van Smith and infiltrates Doctor Death's inner circle. The Doctor gives Jabah poison pollen, which he uses to kill Bruce's alter ego. However, Bruce saves Van Smith by covering his mouth and preventing him from inhaling the poison.
Batman follows Jabah to Doctor Death's hideout, where he ambushes them both. Doctor Death attempts to start a fire, but Batman pursues him to his lab. The Doctor seemingly perishes in the blaze, proving the old adage that crime never pays.
