Batman #40, written by Bill Finger, features the Caped Crusader and his trusty sidekick Robin in a thrilling adventure against Joker in "The 13 Club!" This new TV show highlights a group of wealthy men that challenges superstitions, but when the Joker threatens the club, the man who was supposed to be the 13th member backs out. Batman steps up and things take a turn for the worst as Joker starts committing crimes based on the superstitions they challenged.
In "The Case of Batman II," Bruce Wayne is dead in a car accident, but his will doesn't account for a new Batman. It would take years to train a proper replacement, but Dick and Alfred look at a gym and find Bill Randal, a wealthy amateur athlete who's built matches Batman's perfectly. Bill is trained to be the new Batman, but in the end, he turns out to be Bruce, who faked his death even to Alfred to catch a crooked lawyer who would have added a fake charity to his will.
Lastly, "The Grand Opera Murders" is a story featuring Batman and Robin trying to catch someone who is trying to kill performers at the Gotham Opera. With full-text stories and gag strips by Tom Neill and Jack Farr, respectively, Batman #40 is a must-read for any comic book fan.
