All-Star Comics #1 (1940)

High Value: $62,000

Minimum Value: $750

All-Star Comics #1, published in 1940, is an iconic comic book that showcases the diverse characters and stories of the Golden Age of comic books. It was the brainchild of editor Sheldon Mayer, who brought together features from some of the most popular comics of the time, including Flash Comics, Adventure Comics, All American Comics, and More Fun Comics.

The first issue was a unique blend of heroes, including Sandman, Hourman, Spectre, Biff Bronson, Ultra-man, Flash and Hawkman. Each source title in the All-Star Comics featured exactly two characters, that were decided by the readers through a "content by democracy" setup.

In the first issue, readers were asked to indicate which three characters they wanted to join the All-Star Comics line-up, and which three they wanted to get rid of. This revolving door concept may not have entirely taken hold, but it showcased the spirit of equality and democracy in the comic book world.
