Action Comics #75 (1944), also known as "Aesop's Modern Fables," features Superman facing an escaped prisoner named Johnny Aesop, who has decided to commit crimes based on the ancient fables to become rich and famous. Aesop sends cryptic messages to the Daily Planet before each crime and rigs a boat race in his favor, but Superman manages to capture three of his men. Aesop's second crime involves stealing a priceless objet d'art from a mansion and covering his escape with sleeping gas, causing traffic chaos that Superman has to clear up, allowing Aesop to escape.

Aesop then kidnaps Lois and stages a robbery in a night club, but Superman foils them both. When Superman breaks into Aesop's hideout, Aesop threatens to shoot Lois unless Superman backs down, but Aesop gets a headache, and Superman discovers that a bone chip is pressing into his brain. Superman massages Aesop's head to remove the pressure, and Aesop becomes a law-abiding citizen once again. Although he is willing to pay for his crimes, Superman persuades the judge to release Aesop into his custody.
