Minimum Value: $140

In Action Comics #58, Superman finds himself on the trail of Adonis, a thief with an ironic identity. Adonis is actually fading film star James Trevor, who has been made hideously ugly by a sinister plastic surgeon named Dr. Menace. Menace promises to restore Trevor's looks if Trevor agrees to obey his every command for a month. Trevor becomes Adonis and commits several thefts, including stealing a priceless ruby at a party attended by Lois and Clark and breaking into a secret vault under an actor's pool. When Superman shows up to prevent the robbery, Adonis locks the actor in the vault and makes good his escape while Superman rescues him. The story comes to a dramatic head when Adonis steals a Rembrandt painting from the estate of film star Philip Minton. Clark changes to Superman in an attempt to catch Adonis, but Menace shows up and rigs the Ferris wheel so it spins out of control. Superman is forced to save people from the ride, and when he finally pursues the thief, Menace shoots Adonis to prevent him from revealing his role in the plot. Before dying, Adonis manages to strangle Menace.
