Action Comics #30 (1940)

Action Comics #30 (1940) features a surprise snowstorm in the middle of summer in Metropolis. Clark, who is visiting a weatherman to find out what's happening, receives a radio message from Laura Vogel, asking Superman to meet her and explain the strange weather. However, on the way, Laura's friend is attacked by 3 men in Arab dress who release a glowing sphere towards her, instantly vaporizing her. When Superman arrives, he sees Lois being attacked by a glowing sphere as well. Later, Laura's brother discovers the Lost City of Ulonda in the Sahara desert, but they too are attacked by Arabs with blazing spheres and vaporized. The evil mastermind behind these bizarre events is a man named Zolar, who has constructed them using vast amounts of radium. Zolar captures Superman and Laura aboard his skyship and takes them to his headquarters in Ulonda. Superman fights Zolar's skyships and glowing spheres, forcing the villain to surrender.
